Five of the best places to get out for a walk on Auckland's North Shore
Now is a great time of year to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Fortunately, we don't have to go far on the North Shore to find some spectacular walks.
1. Takapuna Beach to Cheltenham Beach, Devonport
Cheltenham Beach, Devonport, is a nice place to finish a long walk. A number of readers have rated this walk, or parts of it, as their favourite and it is nearly impossible to beat the beautiful sea views. The entire walk is about 90 minutes each way and it needs to be mid-to-low tide to get around the rocks.
Shorter parts of the walk include Narrow Neck to Takapuna and back - a trip where you can get an icecream at Takapuna then return to Narrow Neck for a coffee. Another favourite is Narrow Neck to Cheltenham and back, a return walk of about an hour.
2. Le Roys Bush, Birkenhead
Le Roys Bush Reserve in Birkenhead includes bush and wetlands. This beloved bush walk offers a chance to get away from everything without having to travel far, offering pristine bush in the middle of urban Auckland.
The track includes boardwalks, steps and bridges, plus a lookout platform with views of the stream and surrounding bush. The bush leads down into restored wetlands of Little Shoal Bay.
